There is, at this time, no automated process for creating User (Drupal) accounts for contacts or members.
The best way to create a user is by simply "tagging" them. Under the Tags option - under the contact tab, the Actions tab or elsewhere - just select the tag "Create Drupal Account". That's it! One little checkbox!
NOTE:
- The contact must have an email account listed
- The email account MUST be UNIQUE. This doesn't always occur within families ... in which case a member simply cannot their own user account and must share.
- the user name assigned is "firstname.lastname" ... so Jane Doe would have the user name "jane.doe"
- No password is assigned* - the member will have to use the password reset feature to create a password.
FURTHER:
- the member can login using either the account name jane.doe or the email
- there is no method in CiviCRM to edit the account name
- Administrators have the power to edit username, password and email ... but probably shouldn't.
* why no password? Basically, the developers seem to think that's a security risk, and they are all about security.
